OK, I've played some more with the script.  Most importantly, I've
changed it to make use of "$pipe_decode" and "group-reply".  Also, to
make it more self-contained, when called with no arguments it will spit
out appropriate mutt configuration commands, so you can just put:

source ~/bin/background.sh|

in your muttrc.
