Try a Mac.
Tend to be more secure.
Very simple to manipulate fonts to larger more readable size.
As only simple applications seem to be required, concern with other
family member's (perhaps) Windows machines may be less of a worry.
If there's a Mac store near by, the Genius bar staff really do help,
and the free training sessions could be very useful. With apple care,
service is good.
iPhoto (and the "i" family of apps) and iSight are kind of
Grandchild/family friendly.
An eMac?
