I use the pattern with the limit command and a folder hook, e.g.:

folder-hook vim 'push 
"<limit>~(~P!(~s\^re:))|~(~P~(~U))|~(~F~(~U))|~(~N!~s\^re:)<enter>"'

The only thing that bothers me now is that the sidebar still shows the
number of all new messages, but I guess I can live with that (plus I can
extend the folder hooks to mark uninteresting messages as read).
