Using ~l patterns in message-hooks is what I use; that way the 
rebinding happens as I view the message. If I reply to things from 
index view, it doesn't help, but I don't generally reply to messages 
without viewing them first, so this isn't a significant annoyance.

Here's what I use:

message-hook .  'bind pager l list-reply; bind pager r reply'
message-hook ~l 'bind pager l reply; bind pager r list-reply'

Not (that I've found) while looking at the message from the index. But 
the hooks I use are quite acceptable to me. Maybe that'll be 
sufficient for you too?
