Six months... :-) ...then I have a weekly user cron script that puts
all the mails in archive/recent/* older than six months in
corresponding archive/old/<maildir-name>-<year> maildirs. In this way
I hardly get maildirs with more than 1000 messages.

Have a look at the archivemail program (you can either set the maximum
size of the maildir/mailbox to refresh).
