header field "References:" ?

Sometimes I want to send a message to a mailing list which I'm not
subscribed to. If I want to reply to an existing thread it is useful
to have appropriate information in the header fields "In-Reply-to" and
"References".

Adding information to "In-Reply-to" is easy with the command "E" which
allows one to edit the complete message, including headers.

However, if I manually add a header (while editing the complete
message including headers) like "References: <message-id@xxxxxxxx>" to
the lines of the header, this will not be kept. Saving, returning to
mutt, and then another "E" shows this header line deleted. And from
the manual I gather that the filed "References:" is added
automagically [1].

How can I do this in a convenient fashion?

Anders
