imap_user and IMAP connections

Hi,
I've recently observed that if "imap_user" isn't set in my .muttrc
then IMAP opens a new connection when I go from one IMAP folder to
another one. Otherwise mutt opens one and only one IMAP connection,
and uses it for everything (every folder).
Does someone have an explanation for this behaviour?
