Well, writing changes to an mbox folder means copying around
the entire folder. With 14,000 messages, this will quite
simply take some time.
With maildir, writing changes to a folder means messing around
with a few of the individual files, possibly just renaming
them. That's vastly more efficient.
(However, maildir is limited by file systems' performance
limitations for large directories. But I guess these are less
severe today than they were a few years ago.)
