When you compile mutt, one of the things it checks for is the
waddnwstr function, which is only supported in an ncurses library that
can handle wide characters.
In Debian Sarge, the waddnwstr function is in the libncursesw.so
library (note the extra w), which is provided by the package
libncursesw5 (which happens to be one of the packages that the Debian
Sarge mutt package depends on).
