When I compose those [Swedish] messages I save the file in iso8859-1 charset in the editor(emacs). That's the mistake: The $editor *must* read and save the composed text in GB2312, the current locale's charset. Any too smart $editor
But you can't compose correct iso-8859-1 text in "normal" GB2312 locale, can you? GB2312 will only allow ASCII. IIRC you need an UTF-8 environment (at least for mutt and editor). Then you can input every encoding form, the editor saves the temp file as UTF-8, and mutt tries to convert it to a lesser encoding (or sends the mail as UTF-8).
