I'm still experimenting... One question in the process: is .bashrc
*the* correct way to set locales in OSX, or have I missed something?

It is - i use the real xterm on my linux workstation at my office.. On
my mac I use iTerm - a new version of iTerm with a lot of bugfixes
has appeared, and it feels quite usable now.  Melts nicely into the
environment..
