Re: why isn't mutt threaded (logically)

oh the shame. been responding to messages in private cos i haven't set up my
lists at home yet. sorry mads and charles.... :$ one day the ground will
swallow me up, promise! anyways... here goes:

but then what is the point of programming languages being able to thread
processes? "lesser" mail clients such as thunderbird can check my mail
without halting all other activities. i think mutt would be vastly improved
if that was a separate process.

thanks to you and the other posters who suggested this and fetchmail.
however, as Mads pointed out, imap is my protocol of choice. Downloading mail
to the box i am on is an
imperfect solution for a number of reasons. Primary of these is that i like
to access my mail from both home and work, so I prefer to have my mail
exactly as i left it when i migrate from one to the other. I could leave
copies of mail on the server of course, but what happens when i delete
correspondance from the one - it will still appear on the other, non?

Secondly (although not of much importance because i the relatively small
quantities of mail I have to process) this would add to server load if it was
being polled unecessarily by multiple machines. Ok, that's a fairly specious
argument, granted!

Lastly and hopefully more salient, when you tinker with your home
machine as much as I do you absolutely cannot afford to rely on it to be a
permanent home for that important data that you just cannot afford to lose. I've
lost data before through my own careless practices. My fault, I'll admit, but
that's
why I like to keep anything important on something that isn't constantly
getting hammered with experimental upgrades and bone-headed decisions!

Thanks all. I'll stick with mutt cos it's wonderful, but as the mail client
that just sucks less than the others, that's a pretty sucky lack as far as
I'm concerned!
