Why don't you split messages in several mailboxes? Try using a structure
like "mailspool/user/year/month/day".  It is trivial to setup (either
use procmail or configure your MTA to deliver to the right mailbox).  It
will speedup all mutt operations more than anything else that you will
try to do. ;)
