To answer the original post: At its most basic, a .signature is just an ASCII
file, with anything you want in it, but preferably no more than 4 lines no
longer than 80 characters each.
In mutt, set signature=that_file
...as explained in the fine manual.
For more details, try Google (or probably better, Google Groups) with "ASCII
art .signature", or alt.fan.warlord.
I was going to sign with a magnificently large ASCII masterpiece (not mine) but
chickened out. -> Obligatory mutt bit: Where's the "post as Anonymous Coward"
macro? ;-)
