I use lbdb which iirc was included with the mutt package or at least
recommended at one time way back; I plead oldtimers  :^)

lbdb maintains a database of addresses which you can query from mutt to
automagically complete partial addresses.

09:12 wahoo:~ > grep lbdb .muttrc
set query_command="lbdbq '%s'"  # calling lbdbq    
macro alias Q "!lbdbq ."        "lbdb query"

and in procmailrc
# -------------------------------------------------------
# put all addresses into lbdb database @ ./.lbdb/*
# -------------------------------------------------------
:0hc
| $LBDBFETCHADDR -a -d ""
# -------------------------------------------------------

been working this way for +/- 10 years.
