My error. I needed to do a complete fresh compile and install AND avoid
 the Fink
/sw/bin distribution in my path. The smtp error is gone.

I still have the problem described for this bug. Things are somewhat
different between 1.5.18 and 1.5.20 though. The command h switches
 between long and short
header forms. The previous 1.5.18 semi-long form is not available
 anymore?
In any case, the short form seems ok. The long form can have residue that
 goes
away with control-L. (The method is to move up/down with j/k and then
 control-L
to see a change. Sometimes there is black text in the middle of the
 magenta
 text.)

I'm switching to version 1.5.20 since that's what's installed here now.
