I think it's safe to require autoconf 2.59 or 2.60 - it will only affect
those building from Hg, not those building from tarball.
Brendan, we can
1. keep --with-docdir as override for --docdir and emit a warning that
users should use --docdir instead
1. otherwise support --docdir.
That should keep compatibility of --with-docdir for 1.6 (so as not to
break existing builds) while at the same time providing GNU standard
compliance for those who use it.
Are you willing to take a patch that fulfills these criteria and reset the
milestone to 1.6?
