 You didn't read what I've written: it's not always possible.

 Using a different locale is acceptable and allowed by the standards.
 Forcing everyone to use UTF-8 (in particular when it doesn't work
 correctly) is completely stupid. You're just stubborn and it's useless to
 discuss about that any further.

 Dealing with different charsets is not a hack.

 These are not the only terminals. There are problems with iTerm under Mac
 OS X (look at the bug reports). But also with various software (even Mutt
 has some UTF-8 related bugs).
