Thinking about my post, it seems as if writing the new message with
attachment deleted isn't noticed by mutt directly after being written to
the IMAP folder.
Maybe after <sync> on IMAP folder mutt needs an extra re-scan to update
its index of that folder.
With mbox it's always re-scanned I guess, therefore there are no problems
there.
