Yeah indeed, although I don't follow mutt development very closely, it
reminds me a lot the old Linux development model (well, maybe also
because of the even and odd minor version numbers ;)).

Wouldn't it be more exciting for everybody to have a development branch
where patches are committed and a code slush once in a while to branch
off a stable release.  As Vincent said, if a new feature or bugfix
appears to be so helpful that we can't wait for the next release, then
we can backport it to the stable branch once it proved to be stable.
