The original bug was not about mutt being slow; it was about re-adding a
feature that was removed. The observed slowness (which, I've discovered,
is really due to a compounding of multiple independent issues) was the
given justification for re-adding the feature, though IMO there are more
compelling reasons as well.
I'm not going to continue to debate this issue, as it's clear you are not
interested in an open discussion on the problem. I've studied the code
enough that I've been able to patch mutt to work the way I want it to
work, and that's good enough for me.
