I think disabling $tunnel for the builtin SMTP is wrong. Mutt should be 
abled to think of $smtp_url as an account, too so you'd need something 
like:

  account-hook smtp://me@xxxxxxx@mail.foo.com \
    set tunnel = ""

in addition because others might want to use $tunnel to tunnel SMTP over 
SSH, too.
