This is because I use:

set charset=`codeset 2> /dev/null || locale charmap`//TRANSLIT

The charmap is not always UTF-8, that's why I need //TRANSLIT.

(And FYI, codeset is a small program I wrote for a buggy OS that
doesn't understand "locale charmap".)
