Maybe this helps the original reporter to resolve the bug:

On Panther (10.3.9, same as reporter) I cannot reproduce it either.  My
libiconv and ncurses:

[ebuild   R   ] dev-libs/libiconv-1.11  USE="-build" 0 kB 
[ebuild   R   ] sys-libs/ncurses-5.5-r3  USE="unicode -bootstrap -build
-debug -doc (-gpm) -minimal -nocxx -trace" 0 kB 

Because locales are broken on Panther I configured with these two extra
flags:
            # locales are broken on Panther
            myconf="${myconf} --enable-locales-fix --without-wc-funcs"
(without them mutt only displays large character sequences for the
arrows and non-ascii characters)
