System: Linux 2.6.16.1-2ka (i686) [using ncurses 5.2]

The current version of ncurses is 5.5 (last October), and 5.2 is iirc the first version to support Unicode. This is a problem with your environment rather than a bug in any recent mutt or ncurses.
