Just try. Also the manual says:

   For example, if you simply type joe at a search or limit prompt, Mutt
   will automatically expand it to the value specified by this variable.

Nothing is said about <untag-pattern> here, but <limit> is mentioned,
and IMHO it is taken into account whenever a pattern is expected.
Otherwise how would you interpret a string that isn't a pattern?

Also, <untag-pattern> can be seen as a search of messages to be untagged.
