libesmtp patch difficulty

I'm trying to get Branden's libesmtp patch to work with my qmail 
install, and I'm having the problem that every time I try to send mail, 
I get: "See http://pobox.com/~djb/docs/smtplf.html"; And I thought to 
myself: surely I'm not the only libesmtp patch user who uses qmail.

I've poked around a little bit in the source, and I don't see any blank 
newlines. And I tried telling vim to save my mail message as a dos file 
instead of a unix file, hoping that the <CR><LF> at the end of each line 
of the file was it... what might the problem still be? The headers?
