I can't reproduce either.
I tried with
mutt -F /dev/null -e'mailboxes imaps://DOM\\userid@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/; \
set spoolfile=imaps://DOM\\userid@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx/; \
set folder=/home/userid/Mail'
a) I come into the named IMAP mailbox.
b) I can change with <c><TAB> to one of the mailboxes in the folder dir
c) I can change with <c><TAB><TAB> back to the IMAP mailbox without
being re-prompted for the password.
This is IMAP+SSL though.
