As far as I understand it wouldn't do anything if you don't set
attach_recurse explicitly. So by default this setting could be
turned off. And using the features wouldn't mean another
configure option but just turning the features on in muttrc.
Of course one could do nifty regexes (in macros) for limit and
search but for my personal taste it is very practical to see the
numer of attachments in the index already.
