Your given example is ... overkill. ;)

"push" works like "macro", only that the keyboard sequence is executed 
instantly when read by mutt,
not waiting for a user to hit the invocation key(s) of macros.

  push "<delete-pattern>~f spammer<enter>"

will automatically delete selected eMails in the inbox on startup if given like 
this in muttrc,
or if used as folder-hook command (remember extra quoting level!) whenever the 
hook matches.
