Subject: A new scam variant?
Here's one I hadn't seen or heard of until this morning.
I have my e-mail addressed to an IEEE address, and then forwarded to a
service I don't publish the address of - so that I have the freedom
to change
it. This is common, of course: many people want a "permanent" public
e-mail address. Today, I got some mail which made me realize that
people
who do this through IEEE constitute an affinity group of a sort, and
so I got
mail touting a stock which purports to be for " IEEE.ORG investors" and
encourages us with "Good luck!!. ieee.org team!"
The stock which was advocated has no obvious affinity with IEEE or its
members, so it's quite possible that the spammers don't know - or care -
what the IEEE is. But my relationship with IEEE was enough to cause
them to use that as a way to attempt to legitimize the mail to me.
