Regarding the motivation and/or requirement for tax-exempt organizations to report financial information....at least for tax- exempt charitable organizations, there is an organization found at guidestar.org that rolls up financial (form 990 and related) info. The purpose of doing this is to enable grant makers or folks looking to do donations to easily find the type of organization to which they wish to donate. It is possible to search their database in a number of ways and they span a huge number of organizations.

It would seem to be the case that financial information on for- profit institutions would be accessible via required reporting for taxation purposes. Tax-exempt institutions might have no requirement, no motivation, and no reason to report financial information except internally. I would like to hear any challenges to that assertion. Sociological articles I have edited demonstarte access to a lot of demographic information on church membership. Contacting an author in one of these journals might be a start:

Some financial information would also be (somewhat) inferrable from required reporting of payroll for income tax purposes. Ministers themselves are not tax-exempt; their salaries may be accessible by some means, though not in a single national aggregate. Don't forget orphanages and shelters and religious-run low-income housing.
I really doubt this is one-stop-shopping information.

I'm forwarding mostly because this is interesting, and as the writer
notes, isn't answered by a simple Google search. It's too easy to
assume/believe that Google answers all... Though if someone responds with *the* answer, I'll forward it to the list from whence this came.

Dave, even Google isn't getting me this one. I'll bet a quarter
somebody on IP can provide guidance.

Question: how large is the religion industry in the United States?
   (1) How many employees? (2) How much revenue? Not just churches and
tax-exempt organizations, if possible, but also the wide range of
commercial organizations that serve that sector, including publishers, candle manufacturers, and the like. I'm not sure whether I would like
to include cemeteries, mortuaries, and the like, but I'd certainly
like to include religious-run medical facilities, nursing homes, etc., and of course religious-associated educational institutions. This has
to be a question somebody has answered, but the focus of our public
reporting of data is so heavily on the private sector that it's at
   least elusive.
