It would seem to be the case that financial information on for-
profit institutions would be accessible via required reporting for
taxation purposes. Tax-exempt institutions might have no
requirement, no motivation, and no reason to report financial
information except internally. I would like to hear any challenges
to that assertion.
Sociological articles I have edited demonstarte access to a lot of
demographic information on church membership. Contacting an author
in one of these journals might be a start:

Religion, this journal is the only English language periodical

Some financial information would also be (somewhat) inferrable from
required reporting of payroll for income tax purposes. Ministers
themselves are not tax-exempt; their salaries may be accessible by
some means, though not in a single national aggregate. Don't forget
orphanages and shelters and religious-run low-income housing.
I really doubt this is one-stop-shopping information.

I'm forwarding mostly because this is interesting, and as the
writer
notes, isn't answered by a simple Google search. It's too easy to
assume/believe that Google answers all... Though if someone
responds
with *the* answer, I'll forward it to the list from whence this
came.

Subject: only IP would know
Dave, even Google isn't getting me this one. I'll bet a quarter
somebody on IP can provide guidance.
Question: how large is the religion industry in the United States?
(1) How many employees? (2) How much revenue? Not just churches and
tax-exempt organizations, if possible, but also the wide range of
commercial organizations that serve that sector, including
publishers,
candle manufacturers, and the like. I'm not sure whether I would
like
to include cemeteries, mortuaries, and the like, but I'd certainly
like to include religious-run medical facilities, nursing homes,
etc.,
and of course religious-associated educational institutions.
This has
to be a question somebody has answered, but the focus of our public
reporting of data is so heavily on the private sector that it's at
least elusive.
