"Fire at will!"?
Did you misread what I wrote as "guaranteed employment"? I wrote
"guaranteed unemployment."
The "middle ground" you hope exists is a situation where some young
workers have jobs they can't lose, and the rest of them are
unemployed. Perversely, that might actually be an optimum solution.
You see, nobody has any fear or uncertainty. The employed young
workers know they won't lose their job, and the unemployed young
workers also know they won't lose their job, because .... they don't
have one to lose.
If you're in the situation that France is in, with lots of young
workers going without jobs, and you think that's a bad thing, you
should remove all barriers to employment. An inability to fire a
worker is a barrier to employing them in the first place.
