Not only is this true, the whole idea of a centralized control over the
url namespace is totally contrary to the ideas of decentralization which
internet technology is based on.

Both the worldwide postal system and the telegraph and telephone systems
have worked perfectly well, in war and peace, without any central
supervisor. Regular meetings to agree upon procedures have been
sufficient. There is no reason why the domain name system should be an
exception - unless you see the urge of an existing bureaucracy to protect
their cushy jobs as a compelling reason.

The whole issue is in any case probably moot. How many people type in URLs
in their browsers to go to a website? How many make a Google search and
select a search result without even looking at the URL? Google and
whatever competition they have at any time are our new "root", ant they
work equally well with naked IP addresses or even the long IP v.6
addresses which normal people are definitely unable to remember many of.
