First and foremost, Microsoft is a company that has extraordinarily  
profitable monopoly power in PC operating systems and office  
productivity software.  Job one is to protect the cash cow.  A more  
open and competitive environment that does not routinely exploit and  
lock-in users will likely erode these extraordinary profits.   I  
don't see Microsoft being drawn to products and services that make  
users better off, so much as defending their special status.     Jamie
