Dave,
It might be even more interesting to note that at
least one of the soldiers in the interview wasn't
really a "soldier" at all but an Army spokesperson.
Master Sgt. Corine Lombardo was one of the
troops in Bush's hand-picked audience. Hardly an
appropriate person to get a sense of the action from.
An example of her reporting is here:
http://www.42id.army.mil/newsstory/2%20IA%20Graduation.htm
The full story is concisely captured here:

flak.html

Dave
It might be interesting for your readers to see what one soldier
involved in
the interview wrote in his blog.
http://278medic.blogspot.com/2005/10/speaking-with-president-bush.html
An excerpt: "We were given an idea as to what topics he may discuss
with us,
but it's the President of the United States; He will choose which way
his
conversation with us may go.
We practiced passing the microphone around to one another, so we
wouldn't
choke someone on live TV. We had an idea as to who we thought should
answer
what types of questions, unless President Bush called on one of us
specifically."

Keith Olbermann's MSNBC news show covered both of them,
plus the videos that the Pentagon had already released showing their
spokesperson
coaching the troops about what she wanted them to be saying.
McClelland is usually bad whenever the press tries to ask him real
questions,
but this time he was totally lost and flailing around,
not only on the coaching issue but also on Helen Miers's values.
Jon Stewart's shows have been on reruns this week for Yom Kippur,
but Monday night I'd expect to see good clips of this.
