Subject: CNN fights media restrictions in NOLA
From
http://www.ajc.com/news/content/business/topcompanies/
0905/10bizkatcnn.html:
CNN obtained a temporary restraining order late Friday to
prevent government agencies from restricting news coverage as
victims are recovered in New Orleans and other areas hit by
Hurricane Katrina. [...]
In a memo to employees late Friday, Jim Walton, president of CNN
News Group, said the Atlanta-based news operation filed suit to
fight possible limits on coverage. [...]
"Government officials cannot be allowed to hinder the free flow
of information to the public, and CNN will not let such a
decision stand without challenge," Walton said.
I honestly wonder much we would really have learned about what happened
in New Orleans had the government been able to establish control there
*before* the media started broadcasting. The relatively free hand they
had for the first few days is discouragingly rare anymore. Maybe it has
given them a bit of a taste of how nice it can be to really report the
news?
