A nit: notwithstanding what the subject of this message says,
this was yesterday's lead editorial, *not* an op-ed piece, i.e.,
the official position of the NY Times on a matter of grave
importance, rather than the opinion of an individual (or
individuals) not otherwise related to the newspaper.
