Dave,
In the light of this development, ICANN now has to make some clear
statements on its attitude to indefinite continuance of unilateral
US control
of Internet root zone policy.
Perhaps there is an additional announcement made by the U.S.
government, but the one I read said nothing like "indefinite" or
"unilateral".
I believe the relevant text in the announcement is:
"As such, the United States is committed to taking no action
that would have the potential to adversely impact the effective
and efficient operation of the DNS and will therefore maintain
its historic role in authorizing changes or modifications to the
authoritative root zone file."
Well, indeed this does sound pretty controversial.
I am sure folks were expecting that the U.S. government would
announce that it would be quite happy and ready to take action that
would have the potential to adversely impact the effective... Well,
you see my point.
Methinks the mystical process of reading the tea leaves used to
produce governmental announcements requires a bit more consideration
than this one seems to have gotten.
