Tom,

So you got three years' use of the best smartphone platform in the world
from a single outlay of dollars and suffered a few (admittedly highly
problematic) service outages due to equipment failures.

I had TWO outlay (outlays?) of dollars, not one. The first breakage was at 13 months, so I of course had to buy the second unit. That I got the second one replaced for free was a complete fluke.

So in terms of assessing "typical" product experience, what I got was a great product that was very expensive and lasted one year, and I got a vendor that refused to honor its warranty.

However your note explains why PalmOne is able to sustain such a customer service model.

Given the recent problems with Blackberry service outages, I wonder how
your track record will compare after three years on the RIM bandwagon.

My impression is that Blackberry has had quite a good service track record, although I do not rely on their service. An unfortunate aspect of getting the Blackberry is that the cell phone companies require you to buy a Blackberry service plan, if you want to access the Internet. Given the service-based history of Blackberry, this requirement is not a surprise, but it has nothing to do with evaluating the device. (I could post a separate note about the customer service experience with Cingular -- alas, they really are signularly bad -- but I wanted to focus on the PalmOne problem.)

...Certainly I can and do accomplish more with my Treo
than would be possible with a BB 7100, but that doesn't mean your needs

> and expectations are the same as mine.

The 7100 is certainly not as spiffy as the 650. But then its price is less than 1/3 the price of the 650, yet it runs java apps and does what I need it to. That's a pretty good price/performance tradeoff.
