There's a firm that's associated with the academic firm, turnitin.com

http://www.ithenticate.com

Quote from webpage:

The Internet, though an invaluable resource for services and information, is also an unparalleled environment for all varieties of intellectual property theft. iThenticate™ is a revolutionary new system that combats the piracy of intellectual property and ensures the originality of written work for publishers, news agencies, corporations, law firms, and non-profit entities.

Sounds like the answer to me.

Dave,

I have an interesting situation that I think the combined resources of IP could help.

I've just received a consultant's report on Virtual Private Networks that, based on previous experience, I believe has been by and large taken wholesale from another source, perhaps a book on the subject.

I cannot find the source on the Web using Google (a technique that worked very well on a previous report). This could possblly have been lifted from the ACM digital bookshelf or the IEEE equivalent, but there's no search tool for them. Does anyone know of a "plagiarism server" that would help identify this piece or clear it? Alternatively, I'd be willing to send a sanitized copy of the report to any IPer who knows this literature well and is intrigued by the question.

'm sure that this question comes up from time to time, perhaps often, in a publications environment. How have others handled this question?
