Dave:
Thanks for the links to the DTCP site and related items.
As I read this, DTCP is a licensed encryption technology that comes
with an interesting set of rules. If you wish to use this
cryptotech, then you obey the rules. Originally it was for use on
Firewire but now it's expanded to IP (therefore everything.)
It seems that Intel and all the other consumer electronics
semiconductor vendors have signed up. All of 'em.
While more elaborate DRM rides on top of all this (as indicated in
this note about Windows DRM -- http://www.dtcp.com/data/DTLA%20Notice%
20to%20Adopters%202005-04%20WMDRM.pdf), there is already a clear set
of rudimentary "content protection" implied by any and all usage of
DTCP.
Seems that it will become "impossible" to buy consumer electronics
that isn't DTCP compliant after awhile . . . right?
Has anyone done a careful analysis of all this?
Best,
