Dave,

The characterisation in the article "A battle for the soul of the
Internet" of what is going on with WSIS is a long way from the
debate which is going on at present. Few people involved in this
see it as a UN vs ICANN battle any more.

Statements in this article such as " We could expect to see the
likes of Internet pioneer Vint Cerf replaced by some dictator's
wife's third cousin" are not helpful to ICANN's cause. A more
sensible approach to the UN's involvement would be helpful.

Finally, not everyone who believes in preserving the values upon
which the Internet was founded would see defence of ICANN in its
current state as the best way to do this. Many would see the need
for governance structures to evolve in various ways, particularly
as regards public policy evolution and an end to unilateral US
government control of root zone policy. The debate is far more
complex than a simple ITU vs ICANN standoff.
