Framingham selectmen turn off Comcast deal
By David McLaughlin / Daily News Staff

FRAMINGHAM -- Selectmen voted last night to reject a renewal license
from Comcast cable that they claimed failed to meet the town's needs,
marking a rare, if not unprecedented, ruling since cable got off the
ground in Massachusetts.
The company is expected to appeal the decision, which came after
nearly 26 hours of testimony about the package. Last night's vote
formalizes the board's objections to the 10-year renewal license
deal, which the town has portrayed as a one-size-fits-all agreement.
Comcast customers in Framingham will continue to receive cable
service despite the vote.
...
The board's denial may be unprecedented in the history of
Massachusetts cable. A license renewal has never been denied going
back to the 1980s, said Tim Shevlin, executive director of the
Department of Telecommunications and Energy.
