Working in New York, in the days after 9/11 any number of meaningless
security measures were put in place, including having to show an ID in all sorts of pointless circumstances. I bought a $20 ID card in Times Square and started using it. The story ("Security, Fear, and National ID Cards") is still available at <http://www.spectrum.ieee.org/WEBONLY/special/sept01/idcards.html>. Steven
