Dear David,

I am a new subscriber to your interesting newsletter. I live and work in Europe, between Amsterdam and Rome and I know that the question of "privacy" is a sensitive one in Europe. A continent where every Country and the European Union itself is adopting very restrictive rules on that matter.

But I think that - despite a general consensus among specialists - the interest of the individual is the right to be known, not the right to "protect" his own identity. I'll try to explain. In the history, powerfull people only claimed the right (privilege) to keep their own activities under secret: in China, it was strictly forbidden to look at the Emperor. This is the privacy of the Power. Because secrecy was the source of legitimacy for a political power, strictly linked - at that time - to religion. Today, in democratic societies, the only privacy allowed for the Political Power is the State secret on a limited number of documents. And the attention is almost entirely focused on the privacy of individuals.

Off course, I don' t like to receive spam messages and bulk mail at home, but as citizen I am not scared from the sight of external forces, as a political power could be. Even if someone looks at my sensible data it's my affair, althought when someone looks at sensible data of a cabinet member or a member of parliament, it's my affair too.

That is why I think that we should go back to the historical struggle of the humankind: the struggle to know and know more and better, starting from the secret of political entities. Accepting some more spam can be a reasonable price for a more transparent democracy.

I appreciate your time and look forward to hear from you.

Best regards,

Nicola Dell'Arciprete

Subject: Paranoia????

I just received a hand delivered mailer from the ACLU requesting my signing of a petition against the most anti-constitutional elements of the "Patriot" act.
Unfortunately the envelope had been opened, and the petition removed.
Is it possible this was a one-of-a kind delivery?

Bill
