Greetings Dave,

Recent Interesting People posts have discussed several copyright bills
wending their way through Congress, and several are now much closer to
becoming law.

The Senate passed S.3021, a copyright bill combining several parts of these bills, in its marathon appropriations bill session Saturday. While several other issues (intelligence reform, tax return snooping) took center stage, this is rather big copyright news - both bodies have now passed a version of
these Copyright criminalization bills.

More reactions from various public interest organizations, ALA, etc. are
likely to come up, but it looks like Public Knowledge already has a release
about this bill.
(http://www.publicknowledge.org/pressroom/pressrelease.2004-11 -22.6500991518 ) - they generally sound OK with it, making a point of thanking the Senate
for not adopting some of the more contentious provisions.

(Keep in mind that the Senate and House have to conference on it, so it
isn't ready to be sent to the Pres. YET, but Congress is technically still in session, and planning to come back in December, so it is quite possible
we could still see final legislation...)
