My point wasn't so much a big spending boom in health-care IT, but a
change in the balance of power towards more patient-centric control of
the data.... with individuals getting better access to their own
records, controlling their disposition and the like. Just as the Fair
Credit Reporting Act gives consumers more control over their financial
records/identity, I think you'll see the same thing happening in health
care. That may be fostered by some enabling legislation (stay tuned),
but also companies such as, say, Google or Yohoo!, who will store the
records on behalf of individuals rather than in the interests of payers
(insurance cos, employers) or providers (clinics, hospitals, doctors,
pharma cos).
