"Seems like the very opposite of book burning to me..."
Then you should study the issue more carefully.
What is at stake here is not one scientific theory versus another, but a
scientific theory that is being pitted against a religious belief that
has
no business being taught in science classes paid for by public tax
dollars.
For more information on this subject, please Google on the "Scopes
monkey
trial" or check Wikipedia. This issue was settled in 1925 and again in
1968.
Of course, many people naïvely believe that intelligent design (ID) is
about
science, as opposed to pushing a religious point of view, and I guess
that's
to be expected.
Assuming that you're not clumsily falling into this trap and sincerely
want
religion taught in our public schools, then I guess we could be
persuaded
towards this thinking if the education included all of the major
religions
of the world and a fair analysis--with the pros and cons--of each.
Naturally, this sort of thing cannot be pulled off in modern America,
as you
would quickly become embroiled in debates from which there is no
survival.
The scientific community barely has the ability to fight ID; how on
Earth
can we expect to have an honest an open debate about faith?
Let's concentrate on the long ignored basic stuff like reading, writing,
history, and math, and forget this nonsense before it becomes even more
serious nonsense.

How is it book burning to mandate that more information be provided,
rather
than less? Seems like the very opposite of book burning to me...

Dave,
You gotta read this:
'DOVER, Pa. ? When talk at the high school here turns to evolution,
biology teachers have to make time for Charles Darwin (search) as well
as his detractors.
With a vote last month, the school board in rural south-central
Pennsylvania community is believed to have become the first in the
nation to mandate the teaching of "intelligent design" (search), which
holds that the universe is so complex that it must have been created by
an unspecified higher power.'
