Rental car firm settles with state over mileage charges
Some customers renting cars from Payless car rental locations in the
Bay Area were stunned to see their "unlimited" mileage vehicle
rentals had unexpected out-of-state usage surcharges -- some as high
as $3,000 -- tacked on when they checked them in.
Now those renters will get their money back under a settlement
announced Tuesday by California Attorney General Bill Lockyer who had
brought a consumer protection lawsuit against Acceleron Corp., parent
company of the Payless operations.
The company failed to notify its renters that their vehicles were
equipped with global positioning systems (GPS) to track their
movements, Lockyer said.
